Studying Chemistry at University: What It’s Really Like & How to Get There

Updated October 2025 · by Joe White

Chemistry sits at the heart of science, connecting physics, biology, engineering and materials. Here’s what degrees look like, the grades universities ask for, and how to build experience in Year 12.

Typical Entry Requirements

  • MChem/MSci: A*A*A to ABB (most commonly A*AA–AAA)
  • BSc: AAA to BBB (most commonly AAA–AAB)

Maths is often recommended and is required by some higher‑tier courses; physics or biology are helpful complements.

What the Course Covers

Years 1–2 cover inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, analytical techniques and scientific maths. Later years offer specialisms (e.g. catalysis, materials, medicinal) and a substantial research project; integrated master’s often include industry or research placements.

Skills You’ll Develop

  • Lab technique, safety, analytical instrumentation
  • Mathematics, data analysis, coding for science
  • Scientific writing and presentations
  • Project management and teamwork

Careers After Chemistry

Graduates go into pharmaceuticals, materials and energy, analytics, environmental roles, finance/data, and education. The analytical problem‑solving mindset is valued across sectors.

Year 12 – The Best Time to Build Experience

UCAS opens in early September of Year 13 and many deadlines (Oxbridge/Medicine) fall on 15 October. Applications for taster days, summer schools and placements typically close during Spring of Year 12. Consider:

  • Nuffield Research Placements – summer lab or data projects after Year 12.
  • Gold CREST Awards – independent research projects recognised by universities.
  • Sutton Trust Summer Schools & UNIQ Oxford – free academic residentials.
  • In2ScienceUK – mentoring and placements with STEM professionals.
  • Springpod Virtual Work Experience – flexible online programmes.
  • University Taster Days – subject masterclasses and campus visits.

Keep a single reflective record of what you do and what you learn; it makes UCAS responses much easier to write.
